Big City Adventures and Growing as an Artist

We recently returned home from a month long trip in San Francisco. This special Summer adventure has brought us closer as a family and has pushed me to grow significantly as an artist. The trip was Brian's idea, to get out of the heat and show Caroline the city while I plein air paint daily.

Prior to leaving, I began studying the book, Plein Air Painters of California, The North and San Francisco artist Arthur Frank Mathews. I was especially inspired by his paintings of windswept trees including cypress and eucalyptus. Sonora artist and former mayor, Jack Cassinetto also studied Mathews' works. I visited several museums but was most struck by a drive up north to Christopher Queen gallery and their show: Early Artists of the Bohemian Club an extensive collection of Early California paintings including artists from the 1860's to the 1940's.

I anticipated painting busy urban street scenes but was mostly inspired by the beautiful trees and parks in the city. The coast gives a particular character to the trees. They are shaped by the wind blowing through their branches.

Most days I would leave around 6am on foot with my plein air gear and walk from Russian Hill through Lombard street to the Marina. I enjoyed painting in and around Ft. Mason because of the open space, tall trees and historic buildings. I've definitely had some setbacks including a blown over easel, broken tripod and unexpected rain.
