Two of my favorite paintings from the Arizona Collection were both painted on the same canvas. First I looked north east as the sun rose mid morning. And once finished with the first mountain and desert scene, I turned around and painted the gorgeous McDowell Mountains beyond the winding dirt road leading to the vast wilderness of the McDowell Nature Preserve.
I found myself wanting to paint the long beautiful horizon of the desert and using a wide horizontal format to convey its beauty.
The McDowell Mountains rise to the east of Scottsdale and span about 10 miles. The range is composed of miocene deposits left nearly five million years ago. The McDowells share borders with the cities of Fountain Hills, Scottsdale, and Maricopa County.
