Embarking on a road trip through Arizona was a journey of artistic growth and personal reflection. The itinerary encompassed diverse experiences, from a visit with family in Los Angeles to plein air camaraderie in Scottsdale and solitary moments while painting the Vermilion Cliffs.

The journey began at my cousin's home in Beachwood Canyon, Los Angeles, with Brad and Sara’s hospitality (homemade cookies) and the bustling Southern California atmosphere.

Their gorgeous orange Maine Coon cats were the highlight of the evening. However, I couldn't enjoy in petting the largest one, knowing his tendency to attack strangers, despite having painted his portrait years prior.

Scottsdale, Arizona, served as a hub for artistic growth and new friendships. The Museum of the West hosted four lectures and demonstrations by master artists such as Cindy Baron, Mike Hernandez, Erick Jacobsen and Mitch Baird.

Days spent at the McDowell nature preserve were filled with plein air painting, breathtaking landscapes and connection with fellow artists.

The solitude of the Vermilion Cliffs presented a stark contrast to the communal atmosphere of Scottsdale. Amidst feelings of homesickness and isolation, the expansive desert landscape offered moments of introspection and artistic inspiration. Painting by the Colorado River at Lee’s Ferry revealed the nuances of light and water's reflection, while the cliffs themselves made me feel very small.

Returning home, I reflected on the journey and its influence. Twenty plein air paintings filled with adventure and exploration bring me back there each time I look at them. Thirty hours of driving emphasized the immense scale of the trip. Despite experiencing moments of solitude and loneliness, the Arizona adventure left a lasting impression, connection with the landscape, new friendships, and artistic growth.
